Nathan Johnston
Living with a vision that doesn’t meet the world’s definition of “sight,” Nathan has spent his life showing us all how to truly see – with heart, with courage, and with unstoppable determination. Legally blind but never limited, Nathan is a passionate motivational speaker, life coach, athlete, and proud community leader who embodies resilience, purpose, and positivity.
From the competitive multisport events to the stage, Nathan’s journey is a testament to the power of mindset. He doesn’t just talk about overcoming obstacles – he lives it every day. Whether he's coaching others toward their goals, sharing his story with raw honesty and infectious energy, or competing as an athlete, Nathan empowers those around him to rise above self-doubt and see their own potential clearly.
Through his lived experience with disability, Nathan doesn’t seek sympathy – he sparks strength. His message is simple but powerful: Your greatest challenges can become your greatest strengths. And when shared with heart and hope, your story has the power to change lives – just like his continues to do.
Nathan’s inspirational story is documented in an award winning video produced by Matt Watt: Vision Without Site – Focus on Ability short film festival winner 2016
Nathan’s message is one of hope, of persistence, of the strength of community and one of overcoming overwhelming obstacles. Nathan has a positive message for people from every walk of life.
Our schools, community organisations, sporting bodies and corporations need to hear this courageous athlete’s message of hope for today.
As an inspirational Australian champion, visually impaired athlete Nathan Johnston competes in marathons, charity runs and ironman competitions that many people would never attempt.
As a result of a health condition, Nathan lost his sight very early in his life, but it was during his teen years that Nathan began to see the benefits of being involved in an active physical life that would combat the teenage demons of self doubt, bullying and educational challenges.
Over the past 7 years Nathan has competed in over 50 events and in 2015 Nathan competed in one of the most physically and mentally challenging events on the global sporting calendar, the World Ironman Championships in Kona, Hawaii. Finishing the event in 15hrs 6min, with his guide Glenn Gorick by his side, Nathan endured some of the most gruelling conditions possible to achieve his ultimate dream.
As well as competing, Nathan proudly represents some of Australia’s leading companies and charitable organisations working tirelessly to deliver great partnership outcomes.
